The Peninsula
Peninsula towns begin town meeting process

By CAROLINE SPEAR
Open municipal seats, nomination papers, warrant article deadlines—all are signs of the impending town meeting season. It seems early, but the deadline for receipt of warrant articles in some towns is as early as the end of December.

In Blue Hill there is one open three-year seat on the board of selectmen; one three-year seat on the school board; three three-year seats on the planning board; one one-year seat on the board of appeals; and a two-year term as road commissioner. Nomination papers became available December 7 and must be returned to the town office by Thursday, January 21.

Those wishing to submit articles for consideration on this year’s town meeting warrant must do so by Thursday, December 31. First-time requests require a petition signed by 10 percent of the registered voters in the last gubernatorial election, at least 135 signatures.

In Brooklin, nomination papers will be available January 7. Open seats are: selectman, three-year term; two three-year seats on the school board; tax collector, three-year term; treasurer, two-year term; clerk, one-year term; road commissioner, one-year term. Articles for consideration on Brooklin’s town meeting warrant must be at the town office by the end of January. First-time article requests require a petition signed by at least 53 registered voters.

In Brooksville, nomination papers are available now for open seats and due back to the town clerk by January 14. Open positions are for a three-year term as selectman; one-year, town clerk; one-year treasurer; one three-year term on the planning board; one-year, fire chief; one-year, road commissioner; two three-year terms on the school board; and three three-year terms on the budget and advisory committee.

Those wishing to submit articles for consideration in this year’s Brooksville town meeting warrant must do so by then end of December. First-time article requests require a petition signed by at least 57 registered voters.

Sedgwick has nomination papers available for a three-year term as second selectman, assessor and overseer of the poor; two three-years seats on the school board; a three-year term as town clerk; and a three-year term as road commissioner. Nomination papers are due back to the town clerk by Tuesday, January 19.

Those wishing to submit articles for consideration in this year’s Sedgwick town meeting warrant must do so as soon as possible, by the end of December. First-time article requests require a petition signed by at least 60 registered voters.

In Surry, there will be two open three-year seats on the board of selectmen and one or more school board seats. Full details will be available nearer to the time that nomination papers become available, which is expected to be in mid-February. For information on submitting warrant articles, call the town office at 667-5912.
