Sedgwick
Two seats, two candidates for Sedgwick school board

By COLIN POWELL
There are two seats open on the Sedgwick School Board this year. Clare Grindal is running as an incumbent for her seat, while Ashley Pesek has taken out papers for a seat that has gone unfilled for the past few months.

Clare Grindal

GrindalIn a recent phone interview, incumbent candidate Clare Grindal said she is running for another three-year term on the school board to help out a young board until they can get on their feet. In her past term, Grindal saw a number of long-time board members step down and those seats taken up by people with no experience in governance. Grindal initially joined the board as an appointment but has been elected to two three-year terms and one one-year term since then. Though she is now retired, Grindal spent 35 years in education teaching high school English.

During the last budget cycle, Grindal said she and the board agreed to try to maintain a flat budget, something that was made difficult with a number of uncontrollable increases and less money coming from the state because of subsidy cuts and penalties for not consolidating last year. She also gave a lot of credit to the community for helping the board keep the budget down, raising funds for technology and other things in the school. “There are always people coming in, donating money to help the kids,” said Grindal.

On board goals, Grindal said state requirements make it difficult to have too much control over what you want to do. But she added that she would like to see the school continue to improve its reading program and work more on the science curriculum.

Grindal also fully supports the effort of Union 76 to work more with Union 93. She served on a committee in years past with similar goals and little was done. But Grindal said times have changed and, with consolidation, perhaps collaboration will work and some cost-saving measures found.

With all the help from the community toward technology, Grindal said she would like to see computers incorporated into the daily routine of students. She noted the great progress of finally having a part-time employee to coordinate use of the computers, adding that the employee will be able to help both kids and teachers figure out how to use the machines to assist learning.

Ashley Pesek

Ashley Pesek has taken out papers for the second open three-year seat on the Sedgwick School Board. She was unavailable for an interview by press time. The candidate interview will be posted here when available.
