Brooklin
Brooklin special town meeting set for March 5

By JONATHAN THOMAS
Brooklin voters are being called to a special town meeting on Friday March 5, at 6 p.m. in the town office to act on four warrant articles, after electing a moderator.

Selectman Richard Freethey said that the major reason for the special meeting, close to the annual town meeting on April 3, is to meet the Department of Marine Resources’ deadline for bringing the town’s shellfish conservation ordinance into compliance with department guidelines.

Freethey said that the proposed amendments are mostly about making the limits of sales on resident and non-resident commercial clamming licenses more flexible. He said that the shellfish committee has already held a public hearing on the changes, and that the amendments do not appear to be controversial.

The other articles deal with:

  • Correcting a problem from last year regarding the fire chief’s compensation;
  • Funding current year costs for town office budgetary software and training;
  • Acknowledging receipt of an interim plan from the veterans’ memorial committee.
    Freethey said that although these items are not urgent, acting on them now would save time that would otherwise be taken up at next month’s regular town meeting.
